Battles like this make me want to not play eve. My experience:
Was orbiting the gate in my ares when the fight started, first hostile jumps in, I try to target him and attack, can't lock him. A few more show up, I try locking them all, figuring that the first one that actually locks I'll just attack; one finally does but then because I'm going at 5+km/sec the command to close isn't registered I go out of lock range and lose him. Proceed to start swearing a lot. Double click towards the largest concentration of enemy and try to approach w/ transversal, same thing happens again - by the time I'm able to lock something the super duper lag has moved me to 125km and it's pointless again. I then see some of the hostile battleships clearing the bubble and warping off to planet 7. Since this seems quite pointless (most of enemy fleet is still in bubble so tackling isn't really needed) I figure I'll remove myself from lag city and persue to that planet, lock one of them down and we'll get him there. I warp there and it's the same thing all over again. I can't lock, can't fire, can't approach, even though there's like 5-6 targets to attack. Ok, time for new plan I guess. I get fighters assigned to me, and warp back to the gate; I then figure I'll find one of the new warp ins at range, get in close, lock him down and light him up with fighters. I find a tempest and click on approach - this finally works as I'm able to shut off the MWD before I get out of range, I lock and get off a few rockets before a harpy starts shooting me and I have to warp out. Crap, I just got to actually do something. I warp back in and see a rupture close by, I move to attack this guy w/ my inty and fighters. I again actually manage to lock him, and command fighters to attack. This goes on for a few seconds when I get a jammed bar from a enemy apoc (seems they had no trouble targeting me) who assists the ruppy, then I get hit w/ a big lag spike and when it clears I'm in my pod. I warp out of there having not basically managed to do anything the entire battle.
Now, this char is one of my alts, the week before I was in the 9CG battle with everyone there; that was a 200-200 or thereabouts and it was the same thing. In that I was only able to lock one guy with my apoc in about 15+ min of fighting and the one that the server gave me lock on wasn't even the primary target, not that I had any choice over it because of the server lag. Nothing is new about this and that's where I'm complaining; I can remember fights in JKJ in outer ring and PF-346 in 2004 that were actually not as bad (you could do stuff once you waited the 10+ min for the screens to load). What's the point in getting a large force to attack or defend, if you know that the result will only be that you'll be so lagged out and unable to do anything that 1/4 or so of your force will never even get a chance to do anything before it dies, and another 1/4 to 1/2 will end up being spectators and unable to actually participate in the fight? After this battle I figured it was pointless to hang around in BWF and I grabbed another inty out of the station, warped to empire, and then started to try to bag enemy pods retreating back to their base. No lag for that and I had fun trying, probabally because I actually got to do something, unlike the previous 30 minutes.
Fights should be won or lost because of skill and the proper use of firepower, not because people may have better connections than you. However, in any kind of fleet fighting, that's not the case, and it's why I learned long ago to avoid it if possible - because winning or losing all usually depends on luck, and that's no way to play a game.
